German Embossed Silver Jewelry Casket, Georg Leykauf, Germany
This listing is for a gorgeous antique German silver electro-plated brass jewelry casket or jewelry box, c. The box is decorated with elaborately embossed Art Nouveau decoration covering the dome shaped top and all four sides. Box has a swing handle and an attached key hole cover with a fancy hinged cover. The handle and the edges of the box have been gilded which contrasts with the silver body of the box. The interior of the box has a beige colored linen type fabric lining. The wide hinge is tight and the box opens and closes correctly. Marked on the base “G G Leykauf, Nurnberg” Nurenburg. Measures 3 1/2″ high, 6 1/8″ long and 3 1/2 wide. Weighs 2.13 pounds. This attractive box is in excellent Estate condition with minimal issues that include the following. The box has the appearance of a locking mechanism on base, however, it is not made with a locking mechanism in the top so the key hole is for appearances only. There is some wear to the gilded edges on the box and although the interior is clean, it has become loosely attached to the sides of the box. Overall, these issues are mentioned for accuracy and don’t affect the beauty of this nice box. Background: Georg Leykauf (born Feb 24, 1847) was a steel metal ware producer and trader in Nuremberg, Bavaria. He started his career working in his stepfather’s cutlery grinding and polishing company and took over the company in 1864 after the passing of his stepfather. Georg Leykauf was awarded the title Councillor of Commerce to the Royal Bavarian Court in 1906 and received the Royal Warrant title from various Courts for the high quality of his products and services. He had the title Purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Court of Austria-Hungary and Royal Warrant Holder of Romania, Bavaria, Hesse, Baden, Anhalt and Saxony. This jewelry casket is a nice example of the quality of his work. We at Antiques & Moore have been in the Antiques business for over 30 years and try to describe our items as accurately as possible.
